Why can't a regular cleaning crew clean a server room?
A standard vacuum does not remove fine particulate from a server room. It aerosolizes it and exhausts it back into the airstream, where the CRAC units spread it evenly across every rack. The floor looks better. The environment is worse.
Most commercial cleaning crews are trained to make a room look right. In a data center, looking right and being right are different problems, and the gap between them is measured in particles per cubic meter. Nobody notices until a board fails.
We clean Columbus data halls, server rooms, and network closets to the standard the equipment actually requires. A single server closet inside a professional suite is usually scoped under commercial office cleaning; a larger mixed-use campus fits institutional and specialty facilities.
What is ISO 14644-1 Class 8?
Class 8 is the cleanliness classification most data centers operate to. It permits 3,520,000 particles per cubic meter at 0.5 microns and above.
That sounds enormous until you consider what generates them: cardboard unboxed in the hall, foot traffic across a raised floor, construction two suites over, and the slow shedding of the floor tiles themselves.
ASHRAE's TC 9.9 contamination guidance goes further than particle count. It addresses gaseous contamination against the ANSI/ISA-71.04 severity levels, and it flags a specific risk most operators have never heard of: particulate whose deliquescent relative humidity sits below 60%. Below that threshold, settled dust absorbs ambient moisture, turns conductive, and begins driving corrosion and ion migration on the boards it landed on.
That is the actual failure mode. Not a dusty rack. A conductive film on a component you cannot see.
Say this plainly: no cleaning contractor certifies a room to ISO Class 8. That classification belongs to the facility and is verified by particle count. What a cleaner does is support it, and either document the work or not. We document it.

What does data center cleaning include?
Every line below is written for a live room, where the sequence of the work matters as much as the work itself.
Subfloor & Plenum
The plenum under a raised floor is a return-air path, so anything resting on the slab is upstream of every intake in the room. We lift tiles, HEPA-vacuum the slab and the pedestals, and work in a sequence that will not trigger a dust event when the fans cycle.
Raised Floor Surface
Tile faces and seams, cleaned with non-shedding materials and ESD-safe chemistry. No wet mopping into seams, no residue for static to find.
Zinc Whisker Inspection
Older galvanized floor tiles and pedestals can grow conductive metallic filaments, and disturbing them puts them into the airstream. ASHRAE calls this out by name. We inspect for them, and if we find them we stop and tell you, because remediation is a tile replacement project, not a cleaning task.
Racks & Cabinet Exteriors
Cabinet surfaces, perforated doors, and the intake faces where dust actually restricts airflow. Exteriors only. We do not open cabinets, touch cabling, or go inside equipment.
Ceiling Plenum & Air Path
Where scoped. Same principle as the subfloor, and usually the more neglected of the two.
High-Touch Surfaces
Door handles, badge readers, keyboards at the crash cart, break area. Verified with the same ATP surface testing we run in dental operatories, because a data center is still a building people work in.

What documentation do you get after every visit?
Three artifacts, the same ones every Swiff & Span client gets. If you want verified particle counts against Class 8, that is a third-party test and we will tell you who to call. We are not going to sell you a number we did not measure.

Data center cleaning FAQs
How often should a data center be professionally cleaned?
It depends on traffic, filtration, and what is happening around the building. A stable colocation hall with low foot traffic and good filtration is often on a quarterly subfloor cycle with more frequent surface work. An active enterprise room with regular deployments, cardboard coming in, or construction nearby needs more. We scope it at the walkthrough rather than selling a fixed frequency, because a room that does not need quarterly should not be billed quarterly.
Can you clean while the data center is live?
Yes. Nearly all of this work happens in a live room. What matters is sequence and equipment: HEPA-filtered extraction so nothing is put back into the airstream, non-shedding materials, ESD-safe chemistry, and a subfloor method that will not create a dust event when the CRAC fans cycle. We coordinate around maintenance windows and we will not work near a rack you have flagged.
What is a zinc whisker and why does it matter?
Zinc whiskers are microscopic conductive filaments that can grow on galvanized metal, including older raised floor tiles and pedestals. They are fragile, and disturbing them releases them into the return-air path, where they can reach energized components and cause short circuits. ASHRAE's contamination guidance identifies them specifically. If we find them during inspection we stop and report it, because the fix is tile replacement, not cleaning.
Do you certify our facility to ISO 14644-1 Class 8?
No, and neither does any cleaning contractor. Class 8 is a facility classification verified by particle count testing, which is a third-party service. What we do is clean to procedures informed by that standard and by IEST-RP-CC018.5, and document every visit so you can show an auditor what was done. If you need verified counts, we will point you to a testing firm.
Is your insurance adequate for a data center?
Ask us for the certificate and read the limits, and ask every other bidder for theirs. An hour of unplanned downtime in a colocation facility costs more than a year of cleaning. Standard janitorial general liability is frequently not written for this environment, and most operators never check.
