Swiff & Span brand card for One Mission: Science-Backed Clinical Cleaning With a Social Impact

The short answer: Swiff & Span provides science-backed, clinical grade cleaning for commercial and clinical spaces across greater Columbus. Every client gets a method that runs Clean, Disinfect, Verify, Document, with ATP verification measured against a cleaning target threshold of 25 RLU, and one owner who answers the phone. A portion of every contract is set aside for Franklin County organizations serving kids facing homelessness and poverty.

Every surface in your building is telling you something. Most cleaning companies never ask.

A door handle, a check-in counter, the armrest of a waiting-room chair: each one can look spotless and still carry whatever the last hundred hands left behind. Your eyes cannot tell the difference. That is not a figure of speech. It has been measured.

In 2015, researchers at a medical center tested 85 hospital surfaces three different ways: by looking at them, by culturing them for bacteria, and with an ATP luminometer. Measured against the lab cultures, the human eye caught just 27.3% of the dirty surfaces. The ATP meter caught 63.6% (Huang et al., American Journal of Infection Control, 2015).

Read that again. A trained person, actively looking for dirt, missed nearly three out of every four surfaces that were not clean.

Now think about how your building gets judged today. Someone walks through in the morning. The trash is empty, the floor shines, the room smells like lemon. Everybody nods. That walk-through is the 27% method. It is the clipboard count of cleaning. It sees what is willing to be seen.

So we stopped asking our eyes.

What does science-backed, clinical grade cleaning mean?

Clinical grade cleaning, as we define it, is a fixed, science-based method whose result is measured on the surface, not judged by appearance. It runs in four steps: Clean. Disinfect. Verify. Document. Three parts of that are worth slowing down for.

1. We measure with ATP testing. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the energy molecule in every living cell: bacteria, skin, food residue, body fluids. Swab a surface, put the swab in a luminometer, and the residue literally glows. The meter reports that glow in relative light units, or RLU. We test with a Hygiena EnSURE Touch and UltraSnap swabs. Our cleaning target threshold is 25 RLU. On our scale, 0 to 100 RLU passes, and anything above 100 is recleaned and retested. If you want the full science, read what ATP testing is and how RLU scores work and what an ATP reading actually measures. A 2026 review of ATP bioluminescence in hospital settings is worth a read too.

2. We follow a method, every visit. Color-coded microfiber keeps the restroom cloth out of the break room and the exam room. EPA-registered disinfectant stays wet for its full labeled contact time, because a product wiped off early has not finished killing anything. We work top to bottom and clean to dirty, so the last pass never undoes the first. None of it is glamorous. All of it is the difference between cleaning and disinfecting.

3. We keep the data. ATP readings are logged when we test, next to the room-by-room checklists and timestamped photos that document every visit. That is what “data-driven” means here: you can see whether your front-desk counter is trending cleaner or quietly drifting, and “did they actually do it?” becomes a question with an answer. Our How We Prove Clean page shows the whole process.

Our tagline is six words long: ADA-Aware · OSHA-Conscious · ATP-Verified. Every word was picked carefully. “Conscious” and “verified” describe how we work. We do not claim certifications we have not earned, and we would rather lose a bid than blur that line.

Which commercial and clinical spaces need science-backed cleaning?

Any space where clean has to hold up to more than a glance. Swiff & Span is growing, and we are growing on purpose. We are expanding into new sectors of the cleaning marketplace: dental and medical offices, healthcare facilities, wellness and exercise studios, daycare centers, pharmacies, data centers, tech facilities and other high-risk commercial spaces. Each one has its own rules, its own risks and its own definition of clean.

What makes that expansion possible is the team. Our people bring years of medical, commercial and clinical cleaning experience, with a minimum of fifteen years each. They have worked the exam rooms, the operatories, the lobbies and the break rooms. New sectors do not mean new habits. They mean the same method, the same measurement and the same owner on the phone, applied to more of the buildings that keep Columbus running.

One owner: why does it matter that a cleaning company is locally owned?

Because the person who answers the phone should be the person who can fix the problem.

Most commercial cleaning in Central Ohio is sold by companies headquartered somewhere else. That model splits one job across three people: the one who sold you the contract, the one who schedules the crew, and the one who hears your complaint. Each of them is reasonable. None of them owns the outcome. We wrote about what that does to quality over time in the 90-day quality fade.

We built Swiff & Span the other way.

One owner. I walk your building before you sign, and I stay accountable for it after. The number on every card, (614) 758-SPAN, rings my phone.

One crew. The same people clean your building every visit. Every one of them is background-checked and brings a minimum of fifteen years of professional cleaning experience. Fifteen years is the difference between someone who has been told the order of a clean and someone who can feel when a room is wrong. Here is the screening standard behind who cleans your facility.

One record. Checklists and timestamped photos every visit, with ATP readings on file.

One city: where does Swiff & Span clean?

One city, 10+ neighborhoods. We serve Dublin, the Short North, New Albany, Bexley, Upper Arlington, Hilliard, Grandview, Worthington, Clintonville and Downtown Columbus, along with the rest of greater Franklin County.

Ten neighborhoods behave like ten different buildings. A Short North storefront on a Gallery Hop night. A Dublin dental office at the lunch rush. A Bexley practice with one front door and a long hallway. A Clintonville studio that runs a 6 a.m. class. Each one has its own traffic, its own weak spots, its own version of what clean has to mean. A crew that works the same city every week learns those differences before they turn into complaints.

A map we can drive means I can stand in your lobby, not appear in it on a video call.

Why does a cleaning company carry a social mission?

The same blind spot runs through this city, and it is the reason this company carries a second purpose.

On the morning of January 22, 2026, more than 300 volunteers fanned out across Columbus and Franklin County with clipboards. They walked under bridges, through parking garages, past bus shelters and along the river. They were counting people with nowhere to sleep.

They found 176 young adults between 18 and 24.

Here is the number that should stop you. The Community Shelter Board estimates that more than 3,000 young people in this county experience homelessness over the course of a year, with another 1,400 at high risk. The volunteers were careful and they were thorough. They still saw only a sliver of it.

That is not a failure of effort. It is what youth homelessness looks like. A seventeen-year-old sleeping on a friend’s couch does not look homeless. Neither does a nineteen-year-old in a car outside a 24-hour gym, or a sophomore who showers in the locker room before first period. They look fine. They are not.

I run a cleaning company. I cannot fix that number. But I built Swiff & Span so every building we clean pushes back on it.

A portion of every Swiff & Span contract is set aside for Franklin County organizations doing direct work with kids facing homelessness and poverty. It is built into the business model. There is no opt-in and no round-up button. When a Dublin dental office or a Short North storefront pays for a clean, part of that money goes back into the same city.

Columbus is lucky to have people who do this work every day: emergency shelter for teens in crisis, drop-in centers where a young person can get a meal and a shower, housing programs that help an 18-year-old find a first apartment. Think of organizations like Huckleberry House and Star House. That is the kind of work our contracts are built to fund, and the reach of that funding grows as the company does.

Is that going to end youth homelessness in Columbus? No. A small cleaning company is a small input against a number above 3,000. But it is a real input, it is local, and it scales with every building we earn. The full reasoning is in We Put a Number on Everything Else and in how a clean building in Dublin quietly pays for a kid’s dinner in Columbus. You can also read our Social Impact commitment.

That is also why the map stays local. The neighborhoods that hire us are the neighborhoods that benefit. A company rooted in one city can keep that connection visible, instead of folding it into a national giving page nobody reads.

A map we can drive. A mission that drives us.

The same discipline, twice

Here is what I keep coming back to.

On a countertop, the danger is the residue you cannot see. In a city, the danger is the kid you cannot see. In both cases the easy answer is to look, nod and move on. In both cases the honest answer is to measure, write the number down and keep showing up.

That is the whole company. Look past “looks fine.” Measure what is really there. Do something about it. Then do it again next week.

How to test any cleaning company, us included

Five questions separate a company that is accountable from one that only sounds it. (We keep a longer list on our questions to ask a commercial cleaning company page.)

  • Who, by name, answers the phone when something goes wrong?
  • Will the same crew clean my building each visit?
  • How do you measure clean, and can I see the number?
  • How do you prove a visit happened?
  • Where does the money go, beyond your company?

A good answer is short and specific. A weak one has a department in it.
